The 10 Most Valuable Pokémon Cards — Grading Tips for Collectors
Pokémon cards are among the most sought-after collectibles in the world. A single PSA 10 Charizard from the Base Set can be worth more than a used car — and prices have been rising for years. Which cards are the most valuable, and when does professional grading make sense?
#1: Pikachu Illustrator — The Holy Grail Card
The Pikachu Illustrator card is the most coveted and rarest Pokémon card ever. Originally distributed in 1998 as a prize in a Japanese drawing contest, only an estimated 39–40 known copies exist. A PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator set a record price of $5,275,000 (5.27 million dollars) in 2021.
| Condition | Estimated Value |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 Gem Mint | $3,000,000 – $5,000,000+ |
| PSA 9 Mint | $500,000 – $1,000,000 |
| PSA 7 Near Mint | $100,000 – $200,000 |
| Raw (good condition) | $50,000 – $150,000 |
#2: Charizard Base Set 1st Edition Holo
The 1st Edition Charizard from the original Base Set (English) is the most iconic tradeable Pokémon card. A PSA 10 sold for $420,000 at Goldin Auctions in 2022. Even PSA 9 copies regularly sell for $30,000–80,000.
| Grade | Value (approx.) |
|---|---|
| PSA 10 Gem Mint | $200,000 – $500,000+ |
| PSA 9 Mint | $30,000 – $80,000 |
| PSA 8 NM-Mint | $8,000 – $20,000 |
| PSA 7 Near Mint | $3,000 – $7,000 |
| Raw | $500 – $3,000 |
#3: Shadowless Base Set Charizard
The 'Shadowless' variant of the Base Set Charizard was produced in the early printing run without the characteristic shadow to the right of the card image. Rarer than the regular Base Set, but cheaper than 1st Edition. PSA 10: approx. $30,000–80,000.
#4–10: More Top Cards

| Blastoise Base Set 1st Ed. | Base Set 1st Edition | $20,000 – $60,000 |

What Makes a Pokémon Card Valuable?
- Rarity: Limited print run, promo cards, 1st Edition
- Pokémon popularity: Charizard, Pikachu, Mewtwo > others
- Condition: PSA 10 can be worth 10× more than PSA 8
- Set and edition: 1st Edition > Shadowless > Unlimited > Later
- Holo foil: Holo cards > Reverse holo > Non-holo
- Language: Japanese first printings often more valuable than English
When Does Grading Pay Off for Valuable Cards?
For cards with a raw value over $200, PSA grading is almost always worth it. The value increase from raw to PSA 9 or 10 significantly exceeds the $25–50 submission fee. For cards under $50 raw value, grading is generally not economical.
