PSA vs. BGS: Which Grading Service Is Worth It for Pokémon Cards?

PSA or BGS — this question faces every Pokémon collector sooner or later. Both services professionally evaluate cards and issue an official certificate. But they differ significantly in methodology, market value and who they're best suited for.

The Biggest Difference: Subgrades

The fundamental difference between PSA and BGS lies in the grading system. PSA assigns a single overall score from 1–10. BGS, on the other hand, evaluates four categories individually and calculates the overall grade — transparent and traceable.

PSA 10 vs. BGS 10 Black Label: Value and Prestige

A PSA 10 is the most recognized quality proof for Pokémon cards worldwide. On eBay, TCGPlayer and at auction houses, PSA 10 regularly achieves the highest prices. The BGS 10 Black Label — requiring all four subgrades to be at least 9.5 — is considered by experts the hardest designation to achieve, but has a smaller target audience.

  • PSA 10: Highest resale value, largest buyer base
  • BGS 10 Black Label: Extremely rare, highly sought by experts
  • BGS 9.5: Roughly equivalent to PSA 10 — but lower market value
  • PSA 9: Solid market, good price-to-value ratio

When to Choose PSA, When BGS?

  • ✓ Choose PSA when: Maximum resale value, mainstream cards, Base Set holos
  • ✓ Choose PSA when: You want to reach the broadest buyer base
  • ✓ Choose BGS when: You want to know WHY your card won't get PSA 10
  • ✓ Choose BGS when: You're targeting BGS 10 Black Label (only for near-perfect cards)
  • ✗ BGS not ideal for: Cards you want to resell quickly

Conclusion: PSA for the Market, BGS for the Perfectionist

For most Pokémon collectors, PSA is the right choice — due to higher market acceptance and established trust. BGS is recommended for collectors who value transparency through subgrades or are targeting the coveted Black Label. In any case: pre-grading before submission saves money and disappointment.
