PSA Grading Pokémon Cards: Costs, Process & Is It Worth It? (2026)

PSA — Professional Sports Authenticator — is the most recognized grading service for Pokémon cards worldwide. A PSA-slabbed Charizard from the Base Set can fetch several times its raw value. But PSA grading costs time and money — and isn't worth it for every card.

The PSA Grade Scale for Pokémon Cards

PSA grades on a whole-number scale from 1 to 10. Unlike CGC, there are no half-grades like 9.4 or 9.6 — only whole numbers.

PSA GradeDesignationTypical Condition
PSA 10Gem MintPerfect: max 55/45 centering, no scratches, clean corners
PSA 9MintNear perfect: minimal print defects allowed
PSA 8Near Mint-MintSlight corner wear or minimal scratches

What Does PSA Check on Pokémon Cards?

PSA evaluates four main categories. For a PSA 10, all four must be near perfect:

  • Centering (VERY HIGH) — PSA 10 standard: max 55/45 top/bottom and left/right
  • Corners (VERY HIGH) — Check all four corners for whitening and fraying
  • Edges (HIGH) — Inspect edges for chipping, roughing and nicks
  • Surface (VERY HIGH) — Front and back for scratches, print lines, foil damage

PSA vs. BGS: Which Grading Service for Pokémon?

While PSA is the more recognized name, Beckett (BGS) offers a more detailed subgrade system with four individual scores. For high-value holos and 1st Edition cards, many collectors prefer BGS 10 Black Label as the ultimate quality mark. However, for mass market and resale, PSA dominates.
